4-Ingredient Biscuits

4-Ingredient Biscuits are the easiest and simplest thing that my kids cook.

These are simple enough for my 6-year-old to prepare with very little oversight. Filling, and using cheap ingredients; what’s not to love?

  • 3 cups wheat flour
  • ½ cup lard, butter, or oil
  • 1 cup water or milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Directions: mix the flour, salt, and fat of your choice in a bowl. Add water or milk, and mix well. Do not over-mix or use an electric beater. It makes for hard biscuits. Use a dough mixer or your hands to churn, squeeze, and mash it all together. Mix it just enough so that it’s an even consistency and moisture similar to playdough. Let it set for five minutes to set up, then rip it into 10-evenly-sized lumps and place them on a sheet or pan for baking. Note- adding ½ to 1 teaspoon of baking powder before mixing makes them fluffier.

Bake at 400 degrees F until well-browned to your liking (about 10-15 minutes).

There is no need to grease the baking pan.

Some ingredients my children may choose to add are:

  • Black pepper
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Honey
  • Raisins
  • Chopped dates

Serve with gravy or jam and you have an easy, homemade meal.

I practice what I preach. Here in rural west Michigan, me, my wife, and 5 young kids work together to grow food, raise animals, and grow aninmal feed on just 1 acre. I teach homesteading classes locally, and help people where I can.
